JLGB Legends: A Combined 370 Years as One Turns 100 and Three Reach 90

On behalf of everyone at JLGB, we send heartfelt mazels to four extraordinary JLGB legends who have reached remarkable milestones this year. Together, these incredible individuals represent a combined 370 years of life, service, and dedication to our organisation and community.

Barry Hieger, who turned 90 earlier this year, has been part of JLGB for an astonishing 76 years. Joining as a 13-year-old in 1948, Barry became a trailblazer for JLGB’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, helping to shape its earliest expeditions. As an Honorary JLGB Vice President and former Treasurer, Barry’s lifetime of service continues to inspire us all, proving that volunteering can truly transform lives.

Alan Simberg, also an Honorary Vice President, marked his 90th birthday this year. Alan has spent decades giving back to JLGB, working alongside his wife Marion to leave a lasting impact on generations of JLGB leaders. His unwavering commitment and leadership have enriched the lives of countless adult leaders and young people and ensured JLGB remains strong for future generations.

Norman Levinson, the most recent to turn 90, has devoted his life to JLGB and its values. Over the years, Norman has held several key roles, including mentoring a young Neil Martin (now JLGB’s CEO) when Neil first became a leader at 18. A role model for service, Norman’s milestone year was made even more special as he celebrated his 66th wedding anniversary – a reflection of his commitment not just to JLGB but to family and community alike. Norman shared: “Thank you again for remembering the old bloke whose whole life was consumed by the wonderful organisation JLGB.”

D-Day veteran Mervyn Kersh, who turns 100 today, is the very definition of a JLGB hero. Mervyn joined JLGB at the age of 10, before serving in the army during World War II, landing on the Normandy Beaches, and the liberation at Bergen-Belsen. Earlier this year, JLGB was proud to induct Mervyn into the JLGB Hall of Fame and honour him as an Honorary Colonel – a fitting tribute to his lifetime of service and sacrifice.
