45 Jewish Young People Climb the Brecon Beacons for their Gold DofE Practice

This past week, JLGB proudly facilitated a successful Kosher Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) training and practice expedition in the stunning landscape of the Brecon Beacons. The event saw over 45 enthusiastic young Jewish participants engage in a rigorous programme designed to develop their outdoor skills and personal resilience.

The week kicked off with essential navigation training, where participants mastered techniques in pacing, bearings, and navigating through challenging conditions such as low visibility and deceptive terrains. The training was an exemplary display of JLGB's commitment to providing a supportive and educational environment for all participants.

A highlight of the programme was the culinary experience, which was tailored to meet the Kosher dietary laws observed by the participants. The young adventurers learned to prepare healthy, nutritious, and Kosher meals, including a popular teriyaki salmon dish, ensuring they had the energy needed to tackle the physical demands of the expedition.

The group embarked on a challenging practice expedition that involved climbing notable peaks such as Waun Fach and Twmpa, as well as exploring the picturesque waterfalls around Ystradfellte. Throughout the expedition, participants demonstrated remarkable self-sufficiency and teamwork, setting up camps, cooking their meals, and supporting each other through the rigorous trek.

Gold DofE are the flagship expeditions of JLGB’s dedicated provision of inclusive and accessible DofE experiences, ensuring adherence to Kosher dietary and Sabbath laws are adhered to, fostering a supportive and inclusive community spirit.

JLGB’s commitment to the DofE programme reflects its broader mission to empower young people to develop skills for life and leadership while fostering a sense of accomplishment and community. Through initiatives like these, JLGB continues to support the holistic development of thousands of Jewish young people in a manner that respects their cultural and religious practices.
