JLGB is excited to announce the latest updates to our member progression and promotion criteria, designed to guide every participant through a rewarding and structured journey of growth, responsibility, and leadership within our community. Our new framework ensures that each individual’s journey is clearly defined, with measurable milestones and recognisable achievements that reflect their dedication, development, and contribution to JLGB.

Junior Progression: Building Foundations

Starting as early as school year 3, our youngest members, now known as Junior Sparks, begin their journey with an emphasis on fun, friends, and foundational skills. As they progress through the stages—Junior Adventurers, Junior Trailblazers, and ultimately Junior Innovators in year 6—they gain more responsibilities, from assisting in group activities to taking their first steps in leadership. Each stage builds on the last, ensuring that children grow in confidence and are prepared for the transition to the next level when they reach senior school.

Senior Promotion: Growing into Leaders

Upon entering senior school, members transition into the Unders group, which has two stages: Unders - New and Unders - Developing. Each level includes specific criteria, such as attendance, participation, and positive behaviour, allowing members to earn badges and rewards that mark their progress. Members in school years 9 and 10 advance into the Overs group, where they are eligible for leadership opportunities, participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and specialised programmes designed to further develop their skills and confidence.

Young Leaders: Taking on Responsibility

For those in school years 11 and beyond, JLGB offers a structured path towards becoming a Young Leader, Developing Young Leader, and ultimately a Senior Young Leader, all part of our new Disruptors initiative. Each promotion within this track requires the fulfilment of set criteria, including leading group activities, achieving attendance targets, and earning awards like the Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Senior Young Leaders take on significant responsibilities, such as mentoring peers, managing activities, and even holding national positions within JLGB.

Adult Leadership: Supporting and Shaping JLGB

After finishing year 13, there is a pathway to becoming an adult volunteer leader, starting as a Junior Leader, progressing to Senior Volunteer, and potentially holding key leadership positions, such as Group/Team Manager or Camp/Event Director. Our new criteria ensure that adult leaders receive comprehensive training in essential areas, including safeguarding, event planning, and personal development, so they are fully prepared to support and inspire the next generation of JLGB members.

Recognition and Awards: Celebrating Commitment

Throughout this journey, members have the opportunity to earn a variety of badges and awards that recognise their commitment, skill development, and exemplary service. From the Challenge Award for juniors to the prestigious Award of Honour for long-term exemplary service, each recognition is designed to highlight the achievements of individuals who go above and beyond in their dedication to JLGB and the wider community.

Moving Forward Together

As we implement this new progression and promotion framework, we invite all JLGB members, young leaders, and adult volunteers to embrace the journey, strive towards each milestone, and take pride in their achievements. This structured pathway not only supports personal growth but also strengthens our JLGB community, ensuring that every individual can contribute meaningfully and feel valued.

Together, let’s continue to build strength, unity, and a brighter future for JLGB, one step at a time.
