We Were There Too Project to Expand into Manchester
JLGB Partner We Were There Too, following a highly successful first 30 month phase, will be expanding into Manchester and the North West. The Heritage Lottery funded project was created to preserve the Jewish involvement in the First World War by collecting records and stories, both from those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice and the people and communities who were also affected. In particular, the stories of women, nurses and those who served in auxiliary service. The project will initially expand into Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cumbria and other parts of Lancashire.
The project goal is, and always has been, to preserve the Jewish impact on the First World War and declare proudly that “We were there Too” - hence the project title. This important goal, however, could not be completed by only operating in and around London. The expansion into Manchester and the North West, where there has always been a high concentration of Jews, is the natural next step.
We Were There Too expect that this move will take place from the autumn of this year and are currently seeking funding to make it happen. The project manager will be Rodney Ross and he will be running the project from our JLGB office in Whitefield. Once the project is established in the North West, we then plan to include Yorkshire and Humberside Leeds; Bradford and many other prominent First World War towns and cities.
From summer 2018, the London branch of We Were There Too, will be run by JLGB as we have access to various resources including many volunteers to continue to gather records and information from the JLGB HQ. We look forward to seeing the project continue to grow.
