Inspirational Young Leaders Promote Holocaust Memorial Day Campaign

Over 60 young people commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day 2017, as they completed a nationally accredited youth leadership training programme with JLGB.

JLGB hosted another in a series of Youth Leadership Development Weekends in Bushey, Hertfordshire, with a hundred 14-18 year olds completing the programme in the past year. All who attended took part in a dynamic, skills-based training, which they are now challenged to put into action back in their local communities.

Following completion of this programme, young Jewish leaders from across the UK will be recognised for their outstanding performance by the Open College Network (OCN), a national organisation that creates and awards qualifications. All those aged 14-18 are eligible for qualifications in: Citizenship & Social Responsibility, Organisational Skills, Youth Leadership, Teamwork, Safeguarding and more. As an approved OCN centre, JLGB offers hundreds of young people transferable skills which in today’s highly competitive world make an invaluable addition to a young person’s CV or university application.

The most recent Youth Leadership Development Weekend coincided with Holocaust Memorial Day. Consequently, participants took part in a moving commemoration led by our Israeli emissaries or ‘shinshinim’, Shir Talmor and Asmara Tagania, who are currently on a year-long programme in the UK, working with JLGB and other communal organisations. The ceremony concluded with all attendees promoting the #weremember campaign, championed by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and supported by The Jewish News and World Jewish Congress, across social media.

Emily Diamond, 16 from the Redbridge branch of JLGB, said: “It’s so important that, as young people and Jewish leaders, we commemorate the horrors of the Holocaust. The ceremony was really moving and the #weremember campaign is a fantastic way to raise awareness back in our communities.”

Shir Talmor and Asmara Tagania, added: “We were so inspired by seeing so many young people developing their leadership skills and honouring the memory of Holocaust victims and survivors.”

Michael Livingston, who coordinates JLGB’s leadership training programme, added: “This is a really exciting time for JLGB and it was great to see so many young people excited about developing as leaders and volunteering in their local communities.”
