JLGB National Champions: Redbridge Band
Over 220 young people and volunteer leaders from the from JLGB groups all over the UK came together for the annual Walton Trophy and Banner competitions in Manchester last Sunday. Groups from Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool, Birmingham, North London, Essex and Hertfordshire took part in a fantastic competition to not only crown the annual regional champions, but also to compete for the Ancil Trophy to become the national champions.
The day was fun packed with teams pitting their wits against each other in sports, quizzes, code breaking team challenges as well as the traditional drill and inspection competitions. When all the results were counted up Redbridge Band ran out as the winners of the Banner competition and Cardiff won the Walton Trophy for the 6th consecutive year. Those scores where then looked at and Redbridge Band won by the narrowest of margins to be crowned the new national JLGB champions.
Daniel Lever, who is a Student in Manchester said, ‘It was great to see all my friends from across the country again. It was one of the best days of the year so far, to be able to put all my skills to good use and see the smiles on the faces of the young members is great.’
Linda Diamond, the adult volunteer who is in charge of the overall winners said, ‘We are so proud of all the members, they worked hard as individuals and showed incredible teamwork. We couldn’t stop them smiling even when they boarded the coach at 5:30am to travel up north. To end up winning is a great end to a day I am sure no one will forget in a hurry.’
Edna Terret, The JLGB Deputy Commandant, said ‘It is great to bring Jewish young people from all across the UK to come together in Manchester to meet, to socialise to compete and have fun – the future is in safe hands with our excellent young leaders!’
