Grab Your Rucksack and Walking Boots
“Absolutely fantastic!” That’s how JLGB’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Northern Coordinator Steven Weller described the determination and effort of all the 55 participants, from the North of England who took part in Bronze and Gold Award Expeditions over the last few weeks. For the Bronze Award, 25 students from King David High School walked and camped out near Rivington in Bolton. Whilst the weather made this a very difficult task all participants have something incredible to be proud of. Two days later another 21 students from King David Yavneh Girls camped out and walked similar routes on the West Pennine Moors. At the same time 8 students from around the UK (including 6 from King David High Sixth Form) were in the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales – (the SAS train here) doing their training and practice for their upcoming Gold Expedition. This week has also seen an extra group with participants from Leeds and Manchester complete their Bronze expedition assessments together. September will see up to 15 more participants complete their Silver expeditions.
Steven, who was out with both King David groups has been amazed by the number of Jewish young people who have wanted to gain a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. “Gaining a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at any level is a fantastic individual achievement. It adds tremendous value and kudos to a persons CV and if you reach the pinnacle, the Gold, you will be invited to receive your certificate from The Duke of Edinburgh himself at St James’ Palace.”
With the JLGB running DofE groups across the UK including London, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and with new groups planned for Liverpool and Cardiff, an estimated 700 young Jewish people are expected to start their DofE in the next school term. With this in mind new participants who will be going into year 9 of High School (or above) can enrol now at www.jlgb.org/dofe
