Name: Deanne Salamon

Age: 49 years

Occupation: Part Time Administrator

What does ‘doing your bit’ mean to you?:

I have been involved in JLGB for over 30 years. Firstly running Southgate JLGB then, with my husband, helping to set up a group in Borehamwood. Now, following a move to Cardiff we run the group there. So I’ve ‘done my bit’ in three towns and two countries!

For me, it’s wonderful to see my own children, who are also involved with with JLGB, form amazing friendships. I have gained so much from JLGB and ‘doing my bit’ means giving other children that opportunity too.

What have you gained from JLGB?:

I gained a husband! But, seriously I gain immense pleasure in seeing the young people of our community make new friends from all parts of the UK and beyond. I’ve also developed the confidence to go out and try new activities and learn new skills and I’m continually learning and broadening my own abilities.

Why should other volunteer?:

Everyone has something they can offer to others, even if you might not think so. Even locally we have found parents and students who are willing to give up an hour or two of their time to run an activity, whether it’s napkin folding or pizza making. Passing on your skills, whatever they are, can potentially make a big difference to young people’s lives.
