Expedition

Achieving your Award is an adventure from beginning to end and the expedition section can give you some of your most memorable experiences as well as a chance to explore the outdoors in a way you may have never done before!

Before we let you loose into the wild with your group, we need to train you up and make sure you have the relevant knowledge to be safely self sufficient.

In your training, you will learn:

  • First aid & CPR
  • How to cook on a camping stove
  • Navigation and orientation skills
  • In depth knowledge of the expedition equipment you will use

You will learn these life skills and so much more as part of your comprehensive expedition training!

The best part of your expedition section is that you, and your team of 5 to 7 people of your choice, do everything as an independant group; you plan your routes together, you decide your aim together, you walk together and you camp together.

JLGB staff will be working with your team to organise all of this and help you plan your expedition, as well as being there to assist you and offer a helping hand should you need it.

Once you’ve done the preparation, the fun starts when you go out and do a practice and then qualifying expedition, which normally means 1 or 2 days off of school too!

When you’ve completed your final expedition you’ll send a presentation about your experiences and your achievements to your Supervisor and your Assessor so they can also see what a fantastic time you've had.

The whole experience will give you laughs, joy and excitement along the way. But, by the end, your endeavours will give you better teamwork and leadership skills, not to mention bags more confidence and a rucksack full of great memories!
