Debating Competitions

We know that all young Jewish people (and the older ones too) love a good debate! Whether it’s about music, football, the best way to make fluffy kneidlach or the issues of the day, we love it!

Since 2000, the JLGB have run The Sir Peter E Lazarus National Debating Competition for young Jewish people. It’s a national competition for school years 10 to 13 to hone their debating skills and it’s open to teams of young Jewish people across the UK from schools, youth movements and clubs, communities and individual synagogues.

It’s unlike other, more conventional debate competitions in that none of the competitors have an idea of what they will be debating until just 15 minutes before the start of each debate!

This is an amazing opportunity for young Jewish people to –

  • develop their own public speaking and debating skills
  • gain a sense of self-confidence
  • encourage the development of rational and logical argument and cogent thought
  • enhance listening and questioning techniques
  • get an introduction to university-style debating

In addition, good debating skills are a highly prized asset sought by universities and employers.

The event takes place annually around February time so if you’d like more information or you consider yourself a good debater, email debating@jlgb.org or call 020 8989 8990 today!
